How to Keep Your Skin Acne-Free After Using Halloween Makeup

How to Keep Your Skin Acne-Free After Using Halloween Makeup
When it comes to the perfect Halloween costume, a great outfit is essential, but the right makeup can really take things up a notch. Halloween brings all the amateur makeup artists out of the woodwork, but you don’t have to be a pro yourself to create an amazing look. With the right supplies, a little creativity, and plenty of time to practice you can craft the Halloween look of your dreams. The trouble with most Halloween makeup is that it tends to be oil-based and heavy. If you have acne-prone skin, this combination could quickly turn into a Halloween horror story. The good news is, there are a few simple things you can do to protect your skin from heavy Halloween makeup. Here are 5 simple tips to keep your skin clean, clear, and acne-free this upcoming Halloween.

1. Choose the right makeup.

The worst thing you can do to your skin is smother it in heavy, oil-based makeup that’s been sitting in your closet for a year (or more). While reusing last year’s makeup is good for your budget, it’s bad for your skin. Check the expiration date on the makeup to be sure, but it’s generally safest to assume that the product won’t be at its best for more than a few months after opening. If you’re tempted to take the risk anyway, think again. Bacteria can grow quickly on unused makeup that has been opened. Not only can that increase your risk for acne, but it could lead to infections. The risk is even higher if the makeup was shared among friends. Even if you buy new makeup, it’s important to check that the product hasn’t separated and that the color, smell, and texture is as expected. And don’t forget – always do a patch test before applying a full face of makeup!

2. Start with a non-comedogenic primer.

If you typically wear a full face of makeup, you’re probably already used to applying primer. Primer creates a barrier between your skin and your makeup, but it also helps address common concerns like dryness, discoloration, and texture issues. If you’re planning to use thick Halloween makeup, it’s a good idea to apply primer first to help protect your skin against potentially harmful ingredients. When planning your Halloween look, shop for non-comedogenic primer or barrier cream. Non-comedogenic simply means the primer itself won’t clog your pores – this is particularly important if your skin is prone to acne. If you want a multi-purpose product to streamline your routine, try Nude Perfect which is a hybrid of fluid moisturizer plus a silicone-free primer in one product.

3. Cleanse and cleanse again.

After your night of tricks and treats is over, it’s time to cleanse and cleanse again. Sleeping in your makeup on a regular night puts you at risk for breakouts, but a full face of heavy, oil-based makeup is a nightmare waiting to happen. Lather up with an oil-free makeup remover or cleanser, rinsing often to remove as much of the makeup as you can. When choosing a cleanser, opt for something gentle and revitalizing. All Yon-Ka cleansers are pH friendly, so they won’t strip your skin of its essential lipids. Gel cleansers like Yon-Ka Gel Nettoyant are ideal for combination, oily, and acne-prone skin while cream cleansers like Yon-Ka Lait Nettoyant are perfect for dry and sensitive skin types. Apply the cleanser with a clean cloth or your fingertips – don’t scrub! After rinsing, perform a double cleanse with Yon-Ka Eau Micellaire to remove any lingering traces of surface oil, makeup, and other impurities then finish with a spritz of Lotion Yon-Ka toner.

4. Exfoliate on a regular basis.

While removing makeup is the most important step in preventing post-Halloween breakouts, it doesn’t hurt to give your skin a little extra attention before you head off to bed. Regular exfoliation helps prevent clogged pores which can reduce the risk for breakouts. It also helps boost collagen production to keep your skin looking youthful and supple for as long as possible. Yon-Ka exfoliators like Gommage Yon-Ka and Guarana Scrub are ideal for preventing acne breakouts. Gommage Yon-Ka is a hydrating gel peel that clarifies, hydrates, and balances the skin in a gentle, particle-free solution for all skin types. If you prefer a deeper scrub, Guarana Scrub gently polishes the skin and enlivens the complexion through the use of guarana seed, not harsh particles. To give your skin a boost of extra exfoliation to recover from heavy Halloween makeup, consider applying an exfoliating sleeping mask like Glyconight 10% Masque. This creamy sleep mask features 10% glycolic acid to eliminate dead cells, speed cell renewal, and refine skin texture while you sleep.

5. Purify and detoxify with a clay mask.

Acne-prone skin tends to be pretty oily, so added oil-based Halloween makeup is a recipe for disaster. On top of cleansing and exfoliating, applying a clay mask can help remove some of that excess oil while purifying and detoxifying the skin. Clay masks like Yon-Ka Masque 103 and Masque 105 help absorb surface oil while clearing the skin and tightening the pores. Masque 103 is a triple clay mask made up of a blend of montmorillonite, bentonite, and kaolin clay infused with clarifying botanicals like wild thyme, sweet orange, lime, and sage. If you have dry or sensitive skin, Masque 105 may be the best option. This clarifying clay mask soothes the skin with savory extract while tightening pores and absorbing surface oil. No matter how vigilant you are with your skincare routine, blemishes and breakouts can still happen. Twice daily cleansing, exfoliating 2 to 3 times per week, and using clay masks can help but sometimes you need to call in the big guns. Juvenil purifying anti-blemish concentrate is your secret weapon against blemishes and breakouts. Apply it as needed to keep your skin clear and acne-free.
